Panels, Keypads, and Scenes: What Goes Into the System
For a hillside property like this, we typically work in Lutron or Savant. Lutron’s centralized line runs from Radio Ra3 down through Radio Ra2, Ra2 Select, and Caseta; Savant offers both a wireless retrofit option and a true centralized system for new construction, with the Ascend keypad line built for centralized installs and the older Echo and Metropolitan styles still available. A local dimmer controls one light from the wall it’s mounted on. A centralized, or panelized, system moves that dimming into a rack of multi-channel dimmers at one panel location and replaces the switch bank with a small keypad that fires several loads at once, useful in a home where the kitchen, the great room, and the view deck might otherwise need five or six separate switches between them. Centralizing does add roughly 20 to 50 percent to the lighting budget over local dimmers, mainly for the extra wire runs a hillside layout requires, but it buys scenes: one button for arrival, one for evening on the view side, triggered from a keypad, a remote, or the automation app.
