How Mesa's Older Homes Change an Alarm Install

Mesa was settled before the other East Valley cities and grew into the biggest one, and that age shapes our planning as soon as a system quote starts. Take a 1960s block-wall ranch house near downtown Mesa: whoever wired it originally had no reason to plan for an alarm panel, so getting sensor and keypad cable to where it needs to go usually means working it through solid block and tight attic space instead of landing it on an existing rough-in. It’s slower work, and it calls for door and window contacts placed to fit construction that was never planned around them. Drive east past Signal Butte and the picture changes: newer two-story frame-and-stucco homes have more open wall cavities and attic access, but also more square footage, more entry points, and a second story that needs its own coverage for upstairs windows and balconies. We size every system to the house in front of us, not a standard package. A three-bedroom ranch near Main Street and a two-story build out near Eastmark call for different door contact counts, different keypad placement, and in the older homes, more time on the retrofit itself. Working out of our shop on West Birchwood Avenue, we see this whole range of Mesa construction on a weekly basis, and we plan the wiring path before we ever touch a wall.

The Alarm Systems We Install, and How Our Model Works

Alarm system installation in Mesa usually starts with picking hardware, not paperwork. On the hardware side, Amp AV puts in Honeywell’s Vista and Pro Series alarm lines and Clare Controls systems, and for homeowners who prefer Ring, we supply and set up that equipment configured to run under a Ring Protect subscription. We don’t build our business around signing Mesa homeowners into long-term monitoring contracts. Instead, we sell quality equipment once and install it correctly, with the system simple enough to run yourself afterward. If you already have an alarm system from a different manufacturer, we won’t service it as-is; we standardize on the products above so we can actually support what we install, which usually means replacing the main components first. Monitoring is optional. Plenty of Mesa homeowners self-monitor, handling alerts on their own phone and deciding for themselves whether to call the police. If you want it, we’ll help set up third-party monitoring through our recommended providers, and it’s worth checking whether your insurance offers a discount for having it.

During the course of our new build, we got a few AV quotes, but when I visited the showroom and spoke to Greg I was sold. During the build process I was there daily watching subs and their work, AMP AV was always on time, extremely meticulous in the routing of cables and placement of equipment, and always clean. At the end of the install, everything was as planned and looks amazing. Never being a home audio guy, it sold me after this experience with Greg and Ryan. Also being a little tech challenged, they came back out to dial me and my wife in on how to use everything to it's potential. Definitely recommend, and this is not a paid review. 5 stars!

Highly recommended. They installed a home theater surround sound system and also fixed some faulty wiring for our patio speakers. Excellent work quality, great communication, and showed up on time for each planned visit.

Greg and his team are pros; they were very comprehensive in the consultation process, provided detailed quotes, and showed value. Once on-site the crew was knowledgeable, respectful, and eager to customize to meet our needs. I’d recommend any day of the week.

Greg and his team were great to work with! Greg came out for the initial assessment and answered all of my questions. When his techs Ryan and Easton showed up they were prompt, courteous, and did a wonderful job installing my network drops and cameras. Highly recommend working with the Amp AV team!

We absolutely recommend Greg/Amp AV. This company came out (hired mid to late 2019) and fixed a huge mess from our previous home automation guys. Our system was left complicated. Greg is honest, patient, and extremely willing to help. Amp AV gave us options and were willing to work around with the equipment we already had. Not only are they friendly and professional, the response time is quick and scheduling is made in a timely manner. We will continue to use this company and I would highly recommend for your home automation/tech needs. Prices are fair, I did compare to a few different companies.

Mesa Questions

Cameras and alarm systems do different jobs. A camera can record footage and send a notification, but it doesn't automatically alert a monitoring center the way an alarm system does when a door or window opens. Most homeowners check their cameras after they've already gotten an alarm notification, not instead of one. An alarm system covers the automatic response a camera alone can't provide.

No. Amp AV sells and installs the system itself with no ongoing contract required. Plenty of Mesa homeowners self-monitor instead, meaning alerts go straight to their phone and they decide whether to call the police themselves. If you do want monitoring, we'll help you set it up through a third-party provider, and it can also support certain insurance discounts. Call your insurance carrier before deciding, because a professionally monitored setup can sometimes earn a break on the premium.

These homes typically have no rough-in for alarm wiring, so we retrofit instead of running new cable to a panel location. That usually means fishing wire through the attic and existing wall cavities for door and window contacts, or placing wireless sensors where fishing cable is not practical. It is more labor than a prewired home, but it is routine work for us.

Newer frame-and-stucco builds in far east Mesa give us more open access through walls and attics than the older block homes closer to downtown, so we can often run wired door and window contacts more directly. We still confirm panel placement and sensor coverage for the second story before starting, since a two-story layout changes where contacts and keypads make sense.

Yes. Larger lots common on the east side of Mesa mean more entry points, outbuildings, or detached garages to account for, so coverage planned for a compact lot usually will not be enough. We look at your specific property, entry points, and any detached structures to determine how many door, window, or motion sensors are needed, rather than applying a standard lot's sensor count.
