Wiring a Network for Mesa's Older and Newer Homes
Founded before the rest of the East Valley and now its biggest city, Mesa carries a history that directly informs how we lay out a network here. A ranch home built in the 1950s near downtown Mesa is usually block wall construction, and cable does not travel through block the way it does through a stud wall. Getting ethernet from a rack to a bedroom in one of these houses means fishing through the attic and dropping down inside a wall cavity, or running along a baseboard where dropping through the wall is not an option. A two-story stucco-and-frame build out past Signal Butte is a different job, more interior wall to work with, but two floors and a longer run from where the internet enters the house to where the gear needs to sit. A quarter-acre lot near the Fiesta District needs a different wireless layout than a half-acre parcel further east, where one access point at the front of the house will not reach a shop, a pool area, or a casita out back. Smaller homes and condos usually run well on a UniFi Dream Router, an all-in-one WiFi 6 unit. Larger properties, especially the bigger builds on the east side of Mesa, get a rack-mounted UniFi Dream Machine Pro with 10 Gbps ports so we can stack additional switches and cover more square footage without a drop in speed. When an older Mesa home cannot take additional wiring, either the walls will not allow it or a full retrofit does not make sense, we switch to Eero mesh instead of forcing a hardwired plan that will not work. Outdoor coverage, common on covered patios on Mesa’s larger lots, uses humidity-rated ceiling access points so WiFi carries from inside the house to the yard without a hard cutover.

In these cases we run cable through the attic space and feed it down between studs close to the block wall, or route it along a baseboard when there's no way to drop a line through the wall itself. Newer frame-and-stucco two-story builds out past Signal Butte are usually easier to wire than older single-story homes with block walls, since cable can run through open framing before drywall goes up, or through interior wall cavities afterward. Getting ethernet between floors just means planning a path through a closet or wall stack rather than fishing through solid block, so we can typically wire more of the home.
It can, since each addition to an older Mesa home was often built with different materials and access points than the original structure. We treat every section separately: the original part of the house may need fishing through existing walls or attic space, while a newer addition might have more open framing to work with. We plan the cable path room by room rather than assuming one method covers the whole house.
