Tempe does not have one dominant housing type, and that shapes every network job differently than it would in a newer-build suburb. Single-story houses dominate both Maple-Ash and the Tempe Historic Districts, and most were framed with plaster or block walls that leave little to no attic to route cable through. That construction decides the wiring path first: getting cable from the panel out to each room is the question we answer before any router or access point placement comes up. Sometimes that means fishing through a crawlspace, sometimes surface-mount raceway painted to match trim, and sometimes accepting that one or two rooms are better served by a wireless access point than by chasing a wall open. Closer to downtown and Tempe Town Lake, the problem flips: condos, lofts, and mixed-use buildings sit stacked next to dozens of other units, all broadcasting their own WiFi on overlapping channels. In that setting the network has to be planned around interference and coverage first, because a camera or entertainment system built on top of a weak signal will fail long before the equipment itself does. We also see a lot of rental and investment property here, and those owners generally want a setup a new tenant or property manager can understand on their own, not one that needs a call to us every time something looks off.
What We Actually Install and Why
For most Tempe properties we design around Ubiquiti’s UniFi line, because in our experience it fails less often than mesh kits sold at big box stores and it includes self-optimization that cuts down on setup mistakes. For a one-story house in Maple-Ash, we typically spec a UniFi Dream Router, a WiFi 6 all-in-one unit matched to that square footage. A larger property, or a mixed-use space near downtown with more users, is more likely to need a UniFi Dream Machine Pro in a small rack, giving us 10 Gbps SFP ports to stack switches as needs grow. When a historic home’s construction will not allow new wire runs, we fall back to Eero as a retrofit mesh option rather than forcing a plan that damages plaster or trim. Wherever we can run a cable instead of relying on WiFi, we do. A wired connection to a streaming box or access point is simply more consistent than a wireless hop, and it keeps WiFi free for the devices that actually need it.

Yes. CMU block construction, common in the mid-century homes near Tempe Town Lake and ASU, blocks WiFi signal more than the wood-frame construction we see in newer builds, and cable can't be fished through block the way it can through a stud wall. We plan access point locations room by room around the block, and route new cable through attics, soffits or exterior conduit runs rather than through the walls themselves.
