How Tempe's Mix of Homes and Storefronts Shapes a Camera Plan
Tempe puts more different kinds of buildings inside city limits than any city we work in east of Phoenix: single-story mid-century homes near the lake and ASU, newer infill and townhomes, condo conversions, and small commercial storefronts and offices near downtown and Tempe Town Lake. Security camera installation in Tempe has to account for whichever of those a property actually is, because the mounting points and the recorder location are different for each. In the older single-story homes around Maple-Ash and the Tempe Historic districts, the recorder itself is easy to place, usually a closet or garage, but getting wire out to the eaves, the garage, and the side yard without dropping it from an attic means fishing it through wall cavities or running short exterior conduit runs painted to match the stucco or block. Small commercial spaces and multi-tenant buildings near downtown pose the opposite problem: more coverage points to plan across a single storefront, a shared entry, and a parking area, sometimes for more than one tenant on the same electrical panel. We do noticeably more of that light commercial work in Tempe than in the surrounding suburbs, so a camera plan here usually starts by mapping which doors, lots, and shared spaces actually need a lens before anyone picks equipment.
Matching the Recorder and Cameras to the Property
For a single-story home near Maple-Ash without attic access, security camera installation in Tempe often defaults to an analog DVR system: the coaxial runs are shorter and easier to fish through a wall cavity than a full network build-out, and DVR equipment costs less than a comparable NVR and IP camera setup. For a storefront or mixed-use space near downtown or Tempe Town Lake, IP cameras on an NVR make more sense, since PoE runs both power and video over one ethernet cable and lets us tie multiple entry points and a parking area into a single recorder, up to 100 meters from an NVR port per run. Either path records to a drive on site, and Amp AV sizes that drive to the system rather than shipping a default, working from their own guidance of a terabyte for every four cameras running motion capture. Neither path carries a monthly fee: once the system is installed, the footage is yours to access without a subscription, on a rental property or a storefront alike.

During the course of our new build, we got a few AV quotes, but when I visited the showroom and spoke to Greg I was sold. During the build process I was there daily watching subs and their work, AMP AV was always on time, extremely meticulous in the routing of cables and placement of equipment, and always clean. At the end of the install, everything was as planned and looks amazing. Never being a home audio guy, it sold me after this experience with Greg and Ryan. Also being a little tech challenged, they came back out to dial me and my wife in on how to use everything to it's potential. Definitely recommend, and this is not a paid review. 5 stars!Posted on Google![]()

Highly recommended. They installed a home theater surround sound system and also fixed some faulty wiring for our patio speakers. Excellent work quality, great communication, and showed up on time for each planned visit.Posted on Google![]()

Greg and his team are pros; they were very comprehensive in the consultation process, provided detailed quotes, and showed value. Once on-site the crew was knowledgeable, respectful, and eager to customize to meet our needs. I’d recommend any day of the week.Posted on Google![]()

Greg and his team were great to work with! Greg came out for the initial assessment and answered all of my questions. When his techs Ryan and Easton showed up they were prompt, courteous, and did a wonderful job installing my network drops and cameras. Highly recommend working with the Amp AV team!Posted on Google![]()

We absolutely recommend Greg/Amp AV. This company came out (hired mid to late 2019) and fixed a huge mess from our previous home automation guys. Our system was left complicated. Greg is honest, patient, and extremely willing to help. Amp AV gave us options and were willing to work around with the equipment we already had. Not only are they friendly and professional, the response time is quick and scheduling is made in a timely manner. We will continue to use this company and I would highly recommend for your home automation/tech needs. Prices are fair, I did compare to a few different companies.Load more
Tempe Questions
Yes. An NVR system with IP cameras lets us put lenses on the entry, the sales floor, and the lot on a single recorder, since each camera only needs an ethernet run rather than a dedicated cable back to a DVR. If the lot is farther than 100 meters of cable from the recorder, we extend the run with a network switch or fiber rather than running a second system.
Without an attic to drop wire from, we run it through wall cavities to the exterior points that need a camera, the eaves, the garage, the side gate, then out through a small penetration finished to match the wall. It takes more planning than a house with attic access, but the finished mounting points look the same either way.
Our recorder-based systems (Hikvision, LTS, Luma, Illumivue) record locally to a DVR or NVR you own outright, with no monthly subscription tied to your name. That makes handoff simple: login credentials transfer to whoever manages the property next, and footage access never depends on keeping an account active. This fits how a lot of Tempe's rental and investment properties turn over, without re-signing anyone for service.
In buildings like that, the wireless environment is often the real risk, not the cameras themselves. That's why we plan the network first: our systems record to a local DVR or NVR rather than streaming over shared WiFi, and network cameras get wired with dedicated ethernet runs instead of relying on the building's crowded wireless. Recording stays reliable even when everyone else's WiFi in the building is congested.
Yes. On tighter infill lots we angle and adjust the field of view of each camera specifically to cover your property line and entry points without capturing your neighbor's yard or windows. It usually takes more planning on a narrow lot than a larger Mesa or Gilbert lot, since there is less buffer between houses, but placement is worked out camera by camera during the walkthrough, not left to a standard layout.
