Wiring Around Tempe's Older Homes and Rental Properties
Tempe’s housing stock skews older and more compact than the newer subdivisions in Chandler or Gilbert. Many of the properties we work on near Tempe Town Lake, Maple-Ash, and the Historic districts are single-story homes built between the 1950s and 1970s, with low-pitch roofs and little to no usable attic. That changes how we approach an outdoor sound system in Tempe: there’s no open attic to fish wire through, so the path from the amplifier to the patio stub-out has to be planned before anyone picks up a drill, usually along an exterior wall or through a crawlspace rather than overhead. Get that wrong and you’re patching drywall or re-trenching a driveway later.
The other pattern here is who owns the property. A large share of these homes, especially near ASU and downtown, are rentals or investment properties, and the owners we talk to don’t want an outdoor system that only works if someone keeps paying a monthly fee. They want speakers and a control app a new tenant or property manager can run without calling us. We plan for that from the start: standalone gear over anything tied to a subscription, with documentation left behind so whoever owns the house next understands what the wires do.
Built for Arizona Heat, Matched to How the Property Gets Used
Once we know the wiring path, the build itself is the same outdoor entertainment work Amp AV does on every job: landscape and patio audio plus weatherproof televisions, sized to the yard rather than sold as a fixed package. Landscape speakers run on direct-burial wire, buried the way an irrigation line goes in, from a stub-out at the house to an amplifier kept indoors in a climate-controlled spot, which on a single-story Tempe home is often a hall closet rather than an attic space. Landscape speakers generally carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty, patio speakers 10-plus years, and Amp AV backs the labor on either for 2 years. For control, we tie the outdoor zone into a platform that fits how the property is used: Sonos or VSSL for a rental that needs to be simple to hand over, or Control4 and Savant when a whole-home system already exists to extend. Outdoor-rated televisions handle direct Arizona sun without voiding the manufacturer’s warranty the way an indoor set would.

During the course of our new build, we got a few AV quotes, but when I visited the showroom and spoke to Greg I was sold. During the build process I was there daily watching subs and their work, AMP AV was always on time, extremely meticulous in the routing of cables and placement of equipment, and always clean. At the end of the install, everything was as planned and looks amazing. Never being a home audio guy, it sold me after this experience with Greg and Ryan. Also being a little tech challenged, they came back out to dial me and my wife in on how to use everything to it's potential. Definitely recommend, and this is not a paid review. 5 stars!Posted on Google![]()

Highly recommended. They installed a home theater surround sound system and also fixed some faulty wiring for our patio speakers. Excellent work quality, great communication, and showed up on time for each planned visit.Posted on Google![]()

Greg and his team are pros; they were very comprehensive in the consultation process, provided detailed quotes, and showed value. Once on-site the crew was knowledgeable, respectful, and eager to customize to meet our needs. I’d recommend any day of the week.Posted on Google![]()

Greg and his team were great to work with! Greg came out for the initial assessment and answered all of my questions. When his techs Ryan and Easton showed up they were prompt, courteous, and did a wonderful job installing my network drops and cameras. Highly recommend working with the Amp AV team!Posted on Google![]()

We absolutely recommend Greg/Amp AV. This company came out (hired mid to late 2019) and fixed a huge mess from our previous home automation guys. Our system was left complicated. Greg is honest, patient, and extremely willing to help. Amp AV gave us options and were willing to work around with the equipment we already had. Not only are they friendly and professional, the response time is quick and scheduling is made in a timely manner. We will continue to use this company and I would highly recommend for your home automation/tech needs. Prices are fair, I did compare to a few different companies.Load more
Tempe Questions
Yes. With limited attic access we route wire along an exterior wall or through a crawlspace instead of overhead, then bury the run from a stub-out box to the patio the same way an irrigation line goes in. We plan that path on the first visit so the yard gets opened once, and the outdoor sound system in Tempe you end up with matches the house instead of fighting it.
We lean toward standalone platforms like Sonos or VSSL instead of anything tied to a recurring service. Speakers set around the landscaping and patio route back to an amplifier located inside the home, and every control lives on-site, so whoever takes over the property next, a tenant or a property manager, can operate the system directly, with no call to Amp AV and no recurring fee involved.
Yes. Tempe's newer condo and townhome developments almost always have HOA rules on what can show from the patio or balcony. We route wire behind existing structure, use low profile in-ceiling or discreet surface-mount speakers instead of visible boxes, and can mount a TV in an enclosure that blends into the space. We plan the layout around what the HOA will approve before we run anything, not after.
Downtown Tempe and the buildings around Tempe Town Lake sit close together with dozens of networks stacked in the same airspace. Before we touch outdoor audio or a patio TV, we survey the wireless environment and design the network to handle that congestion, often with wired backhaul to the outdoor gear instead of relying on WiFi alone. Skip that step in a building like this and the system stutters no matter how good the speakers are.
Many Tempe lots, especially the infill and near-ASU properties, put the patio close to a shared fence line. We choose and aim landscape or patio speakers to keep sound focused on your yard rather than blasting toward the neighbor, using directional placement and volume zoning instead of one loud zone. It's a design decision made during the walkthrough, not something fixed after installation.
