Why Scottsdale's Housing Stock Changes the Wiring Plan
Scottsdale’s housing stock spans decades and scales dramatically over a short drive. South of the 101, a lot of the housing is mid-century or 1970s to 1990s stock with tighter floor plans and a single standard electrical panel, a straightforward retrofit for centralized lighting. Head north of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard into areas like the Boulders, Desert Mountain, or Silverleaf, and the lots stretch out across hillside grading with long driveways, and it’s common to find a detached casita, guest house, or pool cabana sharing the property with the main house. Getting centralized lighting to behave the same way in the casita as it does in the kitchen means running a wired low-voltage backbone between structures, not leaning on a mesh network to punch through stucco, masonry, and open desert air. We plan those conduit runs and panel locations before drywall goes up whenever we’re brought in during new construction or a full remodel, because retrofitting a second building after the fact is a much bigger job than wiring it up front. Plenty of these North Scottsdale properties also serve as seasonal second homes, and that shifts what matters most: the system has to reliably keep its programmed scenes and let the owner confirm status from wherever they happen to be living that month, not simply put on a show for whoever is standing in the room at the time.
The Systems We Install and How the Scenes Work
For a Scottsdale project we typically work in Lutron RadioRA 3 or Ra2 Select, Savant’s centralized line, or Control4, depending on what’s already in the automation stack. With centralized dimming, the dimmer modules themselves sit inside a dedicated equipment panel, Lutron and Control4 each build their own version, rather than being built into each wall switch. That is how a kitchen wired for recessed cans, pendants over the island, two separate under-cabinet lighting runs, and an accent light above the sink can shrink from a row of five switches down to one engraved keypad carrying just a few buttons. On the Savant side, centralized installs get access to the Ascend keypad line, their newest hardware, alongside the older Echo and Metropolitan styles. Each button fires a full scene, arrival, evening, movie, rather than one light, and any scene can also trigger from a remote, a phone, an occupancy sensor, or a key fob. With how much west-facing glass shows up on Scottsdale’s larger lots, we usually put motorized shade control on the same keypad as the lighting scenes, since both are answering the same afternoon sun problem.

That's possible, though it only works if the cabling gets designed in before walls close up, not added after. We run low-voltage backbone between the main house and the casita so the panel and keypads share one network, rather than relying on wireless mesh to cross that distance and the stucco and masonry in between. If we're brought in during construction or a remodel, we place those conduit runs before drywall goes up.
No, that's part of why we spec it the way we do. Scenes and schedules run locally in the panel whether anyone's home or not, and remote access lets you check status, adjust settings, or troubleshoot from wherever you actually live, so the system holds up over the months the house sits empty.
Yes, but the approach is different than new construction. In an older south Scottsdale home we work around what is there, rerouting wire through existing chases, opening ceilings only where necessary, and placing the lighting panel where it is accessible rather than where a new build would put it. It takes more planning up front, but a mid-century floor plan does not rule out a centralized system.
Distance affects how we wire it, not whether it is possible. Centralized lighting runs low voltage control wiring back to a panel, and a run that long on a North Scottsdale hillside lot usually calls for its own local panel at the guest house, tied back into the same system, rather than one long home run. We plan panel locations around the lot before any wire goes in.
Centralized lighting can be programmed to shift with the sun, raising interior light levels earlier in the afternoon as west facing glass lets in more glare, so rooms do not go dim and washed out all at once. It is common on Scottsdale homes built with large desert facing window walls, where the light swings hard between midday and early evening. It will not reduce heat gain, that is a shades conversation, but it keeps the room usable.
