Why Tempe's Mix of Old and New Construction Changes the Install

Few East Valley cities offer as much variety in property type as Tempe: single-story mid-century houses sit near Tempe Town Lake and ASU, newer infill goes up just blocks from them, and condos and small commercial spaces round out the mix, each calling for its own approach when we install the same Control4 platform. Maple-Ash and the Tempe Historic districts are mostly single-story homes with little or no attic to work with, which means wire routing gets planned first, through framing that was never built to carry low-voltage cable, before we settle on any gear. That changes the order of operations compared with a newer build in Chandler or Scottsdale. We walk the crawlspace, closets and soffits first, and design the controller placement and keypad locations around what the house will let us do, rather than starting from a spec sheet. Closer to downtown and the lake, the situation changes again: mixed-use and multi-tenant buildings are packed tightly together, and installing a system into that crowded wireless environment without mapping the network first causes problems well before any audio or video issue shows up. Add in how much rental and investment property Tempe has, and owners often want a system a new tenant can run on day one without a service contract.

Amp AV's Control4 Products, Built for Tempe's Property Mix

Amp AV is an authorized Control4 dealer serving Tempe and the broader East Valley, and we start every job with a consultation to understand the property, then put together a proposal built around the space itself instead of a one-size package, with third party monitoring available afterward through recommended providers for those who want it. Control4 hardware sizes up from one condo near the lake to an entire mixed-use property, and the way you run it, whether that’s physical keypads, a touchscreen, your phone, or voice commands, depends on the layout and who’s actually using the system. For a rental or investment property, we usually start with universal control of the entertainment system alone, since that is the piece that actually justifies the automation, then add lighting, climate or shades later if there is a real need for it. Worth noting for Tempe’s newer builds: Control4 pairs with Josh AI, a voice control platform built around not selling or sharing user data, an integration Savant does not currently offer. We only recommend a system when there is a clear problem it solves, not because the platform exists.

During the course of our new build, we got a few AV quotes, but when I visited the showroom and spoke to Greg I was sold. During the build process I was there daily watching subs and their work, AMP AV was always on time, extremely meticulous in the routing of cables and placement of equipment, and always clean. At the end of the install, everything was as planned and looks amazing. Never being a home audio guy, it sold me after this experience with Greg and Ryan. Also being a little tech challenged, they came back out to dial me and my wife in on how to use everything to it's potential. Definitely recommend, and this is not a paid review. 5 stars!

Highly recommended. They installed a home theater surround sound system and also fixed some faulty wiring for our patio speakers. Excellent work quality, great communication, and showed up on time for each planned visit.

Greg and his team are pros; they were very comprehensive in the consultation process, provided detailed quotes, and showed value. Once on-site the crew was knowledgeable, respectful, and eager to customize to meet our needs. I’d recommend any day of the week.

Greg and his team were great to work with! Greg came out for the initial assessment and answered all of my questions. When his techs Ryan and Easton showed up they were prompt, courteous, and did a wonderful job installing my network drops and cameras. Highly recommend working with the Amp AV team!

We absolutely recommend Greg/Amp AV. This company came out (hired mid to late 2019) and fixed a huge mess from our previous home automation guys. Our system was left complicated. Greg is honest, patient, and extremely willing to help. Amp AV gave us options and were willing to work around with the equipment we already had. Not only are they friendly and professional, the response time is quick and scheduling is made in a timely manner. We will continue to use this company and I would highly recommend for your home automation/tech needs. Prices are fair, I did compare to a few different companies.

Tempe Questions

Yes. Limited attic access is common in that part of Tempe and it changes how we route cable, not whether the system works. We start with a walkthrough of the crawlspace, closets and existing chases before we place a single keypad, and in some cases we use wireless keypads or Control4's lower-voltage runs to avoid opening walls unnecessarily. The system ends up the same. Getting there just takes more planning up front.

Yes, that's a common request here given how many rental and investment properties are in Tempe. We build the system so a new tenant or property manager can operate it directly, with hard-button keypads or the mobile app, without needing us on a recurring contract. You can still call us for changes or troubleshooting, but nothing about daily operation depends on it.

Tempe's downtown and ASU-adjacent unit stock is mostly multi-tenant, condos and apartments rather than single-family lots, so there is no crawl space or attic to route through and cable often has to run through shared walls or common areas. We plan the wiring path around the building's construction first, then design the Control4 system around what that path allows.

Downtown Tempe and the Town Lake corridor are dense with mixed-use and multi-tenant buildings, which means dozens of overlapping Wi-Fi networks in a small footprint. In that environment, wireless problems show up before the audio or camera system ever does, so we design the network first, channel planning and hardware placement, and only then layer in Control4 on top of it.

Tempe's mix of retail, office and mixed-use buildings near downtown and ASU means we handle more light commercial requests here than in the surrounding cities. Control4 can manage lighting, audio, and climate for a commercial space the same way it does a home, scaled to the space's layout and hours. We size the system to the property's actual use, not a residential template.
